@The Vimalakirtinirdesa (The Teaching of Vimalakirti) is one of the most popular Buddhist scriptures. Especially readers in East Asian countries have been attracted by the dramatic scenes of discourses between Vimalakirti and well known Buddhist Disciples, in which the profound teaching of non-duality (advaya), etc. are revealed.
Since an astounding discovery of a complete Sanskrit manuscript of the important Buddhist scripture, the Study Group on Buddhist Sanskrit Literature of the Institute for Comprehensive Studies of Buddhism in Taisho University has conducted academic research on the Sanskrit text with ardent zeal and coolheaded group discussions. The first outcome of their endeavor appeared in the three-volume book published in 2004:
VIMALAKIRTINIRDESA and JNANALOKALAMKARA : Transliterated Sanskrit Text Collated with Tibetan and Chinese Translations.
As the next mission in their text critics, the study group has focused upon the examination of the faithful transliteration of the Sanskrit manuscript included in the three-volume book. The academic achievements can be seen in the present publication:
VIMALAKIRTINIRDESA: A Sanskrit Edition Based upon the Manuscript Newly found at the Potala Palace.
This edition of the Vimalakirtinirdesa has an intention to show the unique textual characteristics of the only manuscript so far available in Sanskrit, although emendations and annotations are conducted in comparison with the Tibetan and Chinese translations. Be that as it may, the Sanskrit text is readable in general and thereby this book can be used as a Sanskrit reader in University class, etc.
